How to rebuild and recover in Haiti

An architectural nonprofit organization, Common Studio @ commonstudio.org, and professor and students at the College of Architecture plus Planning, University of Utah @ arch.utah. edu will bring design and engineering solutions to the people and nonprofits working on the ground of Haiti. If you know of any organization that is in need, please let me know. We’d like to partner with them to bring both architectural and engineering  solutions. Thanks! Dijana @  dijana@commonstudio.org

My thoughts to hasten Haiti’s rebuild: develope multiple “suburb communities” of Port of Prince. Lay out streets, alleys, parks, schools, commercial district, municipal buildings. USe a boiler grid like the military used during WW1 and WW2 when they build Quantsut hut barracks/communities. The Quantsut hut is earthquake and hurricane proof and can be close together, maximizing land, water run off recovery (for cisterns). They can have a covered porch, doors. They assembled quickly. Lay underground utilities for the future. Organize families to live in same block. ALthough not beautiful, they will last for years and can be repaired. USe new materials for the Quansut (other than tin.) I have used these for my horses.

I would like to know how we can use this group’s technological savvy and on-the-ground network to help us identify resources within P-au-P that can help care for orphaned teens that UNICEF will not accept into their tent city or find a place for. I have the Director of an NGO going to PAP the end of this month. We can get funds and supplies together to help these teens who are living on the streets and have lost everything and everyone they know and love. We need to identify an existing resource, i.e. person(s) and/or structure that can devote themselves to these kids, primariily boys.
